Trivia

The song "When I Wake" by Justin Hurwitz was first featured in the movie Whiplash (2014), with the two main characters listening to the song while out on a date. The same thing happens in La La Land (2016) as the song is featured in the background while Sebastian and Mia are talking about jazz - exactly the same topic the two characters from Whiplash were discussing. Quotes

Sebastian: Alright, I remember you. And I'll admit I was a little curt that night.
Mia: "Curt?"
Sebastian: Okay, I was an asshole. I can admit that. But requesting "I Ran" from a serious musician, it's just, it's too far.
Mia: My Lord, did you just say "a serious musician?"
Sebastian: I don't think so.
Mia: Can I borrow what you're wearing?
Sebastian: Why?
Mia: Because I have an audition next week. I'm playing a serious firefighter.
Sebastian: So you're an actress? I thought you looked familiar. Have I seen you in anything?
Mia: Uhh, the coffee shop on the Warner Brothers ...

How has this been nominated?
17 January 2017 | by See all my reviews

I usually don't write reviews, but i felt in this case I had to. Having seen so many reviews and people raging about how wonderful this film is, I truly hate to say it, but oh how wrong they are. Firstly, as actors and people I enjoy Ryan and Emma's work, I think they are both incredibly talented and work well together. However, their styles and talents were not suitable for this movie, this was a musical-I would expect the actors to be better than sub-par singers. The dancing element, albeit abrupt and highly unnecessary in many cases, was well done, the routines were quite abstract and I enjoyed them. The story line was nothing more than predictable and in the end rather disappointing. I saw this movie with friends and the only reason why we didn't walk out was simply out of worry that one of us was enjoying it. (We weren't). There are no words I can use to recommend you to see this film - as I would be lying if I did.

Please don't waste your money - It is a cross between a low budget Mama Mia, and a rather terrible Hallmark movie.
